Esses pelos, por defini\u00e7\u00e3o, s\u00e3o escuros e grossos e crescem em lugares onde normalmente s\u00f3 crescem em homens, incluindo a regi\u00e3o do bigode, queixo, face, t\u00f3rax, costas e regi\u00e3o superior do abdome. Muitas mulheres tem maior quantidade de pelos corporais sem constituir necessariamente um problema de sa\u00fade, devido a uma predisposi\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00e9tica familiar. Outras podem desenvolver o problema porque passam a produzir excesso de horm\u00f4nios masculinos (conhecidos como andr\u00f3genos, sendo a testosterona o mais importante deles). A causa mais comum de excesso de andr\u00f3genos em mulheres \u00e9 a chamada s\u00edndrome dos ov\u00e1rios polic\u00edsticos. Mulheres diagnosticadas com s\u00edndrome de ov\u00e1rios polic\u00edsticos, caso estejam com sobrepeso ou obesidade, se beneficiam da perda de peso. P\u00edlulas anticoncepcionais e outros medicamentos contendo subst\u00e2ncias que bloqueiam a a\u00e7\u00e3o dos horm\u00f4nios masculinos tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o comumente empregados nesses casos.
